In this book concrete facts are presented about the struggle for national liberation and development in the small West African peasant country, an independent republic since September, 1973. The focus of the book is upon the new society under construction in the liberated areas of the country, while the armed struggle against the Portuguese colonial army was still going on. The book takes account of the dramatic changes in Portugal and her former African possessions that occurred in 1974, including Portuguese recognition and United Nations membership of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

Watering white elephants? : lessons from donor funded planning and implementation of rural water supplies in Tanzania

The book presents five case studies on various donor approaches to the preparation of long-term regional water supply plans in Tanzania and their subsequent implementation (Denmark, Finland, Holland, Sweden and the World Bank). The donor approaches tend to be welfare and control oriented, although to varying degrees. They have been characterized by extensive data collection; detailed pre-implementation planning; none or limited participation of beneficiaries; emphasis on fast implementation of new schemes; and donor bypassing Tanzanian organizations. This has significantly contributed to the non-use of donor-prepared long-term plans, and the non-substainability of donor-financed water schemes.

Be it a house or a makeshift, a shared or rented room, or a home of one's own, a place to live is central in surviving strategies of all urban households. In this volume the authors explore the gendered experiences of housing and housing rights in African countries. There are many differences but also many similarities in the pattern of women not having the same access and control over housing as men have. While women often are the bread-winners, they are also the home-makers, in the sense that it is women who put intense efforts in making a place home.

Most Sub-Saharan African countries have, during the 1980s, implemented a program of structural adjustment in conjunction with the IMF and the World Bank. These international institutions have thus had a decisive role in the formulation of economic policies in these countries. In early 1987, a conference on the "IMF and the World Bank in Africa" was arranged by the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies in Uppsala. In the conference the character of the conditionality requirements attached to these programs were investigated by a group of international experts and their impacts were analysed on a macro-level and through specific studies of Nigeria, the Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, South Africa, the Ivory Coast and India for comparative purposes. The conference also aimed at suggesting alternative and improved conditionality in the African context.
