Many developing countries have been hard hit by the double "energy crisis" of threatened fuelwood supply and the increasing burden of oil imports. During the last decade energy provision has become a vitally important issue so that energy is now regarded as a basic factor of production ranking in importance with classical components: land, labour and capital. Careful and innovative energy planning has become a necessity for successful development. This book, dealing with the role of woodfuels in rural Kenya, is the first in the series of technical support Volumes for the Main Summary Report of the Kenya Fuelwood Project, "Energy and Development in Kenya: Opportunities and Constraints". This series report on the methodology and findings of the Kenyan and SADCC studies.

This book is about migration to Shashemene, a small town in southern Ethiopia, before 1974. In the book, the migration to Shashemene elucidates the mechanisms behind the movement to small African towns experiencing rapid populations increase but having few opportunities for formal employment. A main issue is how the political and economic history of the southern central region of Ethiopia, as well as, the structure of the Ethiopian urban economy in the early 1970's, has influenced migration patterns of people from different ethnic groups coming to Shashemene. The ethnically stratified occupational structure is outlined, and the role of women in urban Ethiopia is discussed. Studies of other urban areas in Ethiopia are interpreted in the light of the findings from Shashemene.

The objective of the present work is through the case of Botswana to discuss the creation of poverty in the period of transition from tribal to modern society in the Third World today. This is done by an analysis focusing at the peasantry. The recently renewed fashion of blaming the peasants for lack of improved food production and thus for poverty at local and national levels is questioned.
