Upphovsperson: Kikula, Idris S.
Utgivare: Nordiska Afrikainstitutet | Uppsala : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
År: 1997
Ämnesord: Tanzania, East Africa, Resettlement, Government policy, Land use, Environmental effects, Agricultural productivity, Vegetation, Soil erosion, Settlement policy, SOCIAL SCIENCES, SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP
Traditional methods of land management through rapid change in the name of "development" has led to land degradation. Resettlement during villagisation increased the human and livestock population. The concentration of this increased population into nucleated settlements and the rigid so-called "land-use plans" meant a complete disruption of traditional land management system. This study points towards the need for educational and awareness programmes to go along with policies which have environmental implications.

The book is the first empirical attempt to assess Zimbabwe's environmental linkages to development on a sectoral basis and with the intention of reviewing policy for the future. Watering white elephants? : lessons from donor funded planning and implementation of rural water supplies in Tanzania

Upphovsperson: Therkildsen, Ole
Utgivare: Nordiska Afrikainstitutet | Uppsala : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
År: 1988
Ämnesord: Tanzania, East Africa, Rural areas, Water supply, Development aid, Aid evaluation, SOCIAL SCIENCES, SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP
The book presents five case studies on various donor approaches to the preparation of long-term regional water supply plans in Tanzania and their subsequent implementation (Denmark, Finland, Holland, Sweden and the World Bank). The donor approaches tend to be welfare and control oriented, although to varying degrees. They have been characterized by extensive data collection; detailed pre-implementation planning; none or limited participation of beneficiaries; emphasis on fast implementation of new schemes; and donor bypassing Tanzanian organizations. This has significantly contributed to the non-use of donor-prepared long-term plans, and the non-substainability of donor-financed water schemes.

A place to live : gender research on housing in Africa

Medarbetare: Schlyter, Ann | Arnfred, Signe
Utgivare: Uppsala : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
År: 1996
Ämnesord: Africa, Housing, Women's rights, Land ownership, Gender, SOCIAL SCIENCES, SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP
Be it a house or a makeshift, a shared or rented room, or a home of one's own, a place to live is central in surviving strategies of all urban households. In this volume the authors explore the gendered experiences of housing and housing rights in African countries. There are many differences but also many similarities in the pattern of women not having the same access and control over housing as men have. While women often are the bread-winners, they are also the home-makers, in the sense that it is women who put intense efforts in making a place home.
