This book examines the rise and fall of the Ethio-Eritrean federation which existed from 1952 to 1962. The author argues that the federation was abolished by Eritrean social and political forces rather than by Ethiopia. The UN imposed federation and its constitution was doomed to fail, as these were foreign to Eritrean and Ethiopian conceptions of power. ... a book on a subject on which very little authentic material is otherwise available. [...] On the whole, the book is extremely well written with remarkable clarity of language. (Africa Quarterly, No. 1/1998.)

A gendered perspective on the impact of conflict in the Horn of Africa

Upphovsperson: Abdi, Cawo, M.
Utgivare: Nordiska Afrikainstitutet, Conflict, Displacement and Transformation | Uppsala : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
År: 2011
Ämnesord: Horn of Africa, conflicts, militarism, Human rights violations, Gender studies, Women, Peace and conflict research, Freds- och konfliktforskning
This Policy Note focuses on the gendered consequences of the militarisation of the Horn of Africa. Despite being in different ‘moments’ of conflict, the countries of this region share features of extreme social, economic and political violence, which impact negatively on their citizens. Protracted refugee and refugee-like conditions, extreme disinvestment in social programmes, increasing militarisation and political repression adversely affect women, thereby further entrenching gender disparities. Concerted national and international efforts and resources should support local democratic initiatives to find political solutions to these protracted conflicts and advance the struggle against sexual and gender-based violence and discrimination.

Playing with identities in contemporary music in Africa

Medarbetare: Palmberg, Mai | Kirkegaard, Annemette

Ämnesord: cultural identity, music, popular culture, South Africa, Uganda, Cape Verde, Nigeria, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Senegal, SOCIAL SCIENCES, SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP
The musics of Africa play a particularly important role in expressing and forming identities. This book brings together African and Nordic scholars from both musicology and other disciplines in an attempt to analyse various aspects of the complex playing with volatile identities in music in Africa today. Taken together the papers put new light on the assumed or real dichotomies between countryside and city, collective and individual, tradition and modernity, authentic and alien. The papers are based on contributions for a conference organised by the research project "Cultural Images in and of Africa" of the Nordic Africa Institute together with the Sibelius Museum/Department of Musicology and the Centre for Continuing Education at Åbo Akademi University in Åbo (Turku), Finland in Oct. 2000. The book includes a keynote speech by Christopher Waterman (UCLA), and an introduction by Annemette Kirkegaard, Copenhagen University. Both Southern, West and East Africa are represented in the studies, which cover a great variety of musics.

År: 1999
Ämnesord: Kenya, East Africa, Gender identity, Gender relations, Social values, Social change, Sociology, Sociologi
A study about conflicts between men and women in contemporary Kiskii, Kenya. The author argues that male identity, sense of worth and prestige have been more deeply affected by socio-economic change than that of female identity. Feminists, in particular, will find this study deeply provocative but a good read.

The migration experience in Africa

Medarbetare: Baker, Jonathan | Aina, Tade Akin
Utgivare: Uppsala : Nordiska Afrikainstitutet
År: 1995
Ämnesord: Africa, Migration, Environment, Poverty, Small towns, Gender, Rural-urban relations, SOCIAL SCIENCES, SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP
In this book different authors investigates the range of the migration experience in Africa. Because of the variety and complexity of the reasons which surround and underpin why African populations are so mobile, this volume adopts an eclectic approach which illustrates the diversity of theoretical positions, as well as methodological and analytical trends. Examples of the great breadth and richness of empirical insights into human migrations in the contemporary african context are also given.
