The Ngorongoro Highlands and the serengeti Plains in nothern Tanzania are renowed for their abundant wildlife and scenic beauty. Ngorongoro is also the home of some 15,000 semi-nomadic Maasai pastorialists. Together with their herds of domestic stock they have for generations coexisted peacefully with the wildlife in the area. This book is an account of the pastoral community in Ngorongoro. Against the backdrop of national development policies and the history of wildlife conservation in the area, the book describes resource utilization and living conditions among the Ngorongoro Maasai.

The urban jobless in Eastern Africa : a study of the unemployed population in the growing urban centres, with special reference to Tanzania

This study is about a category of the population in eastern African society who have at one time or another migrated from the rural areas into town but are employed and jobless. The study shows that this category of unemployed (jobless) population has shifted significantly over the last two decades from a predominantly older age cyclic migratory target-employment seekers to bands and armies of youths and youngsters who cannot find any employment and yet who cannot go back home. And these are preponderantly young school leavers and school dropcuts, with lofty aspirations and energy but who seem frustrated by or else confess frustration with rural life and as such would not wish to leave the city! Analysis of their socio-economic characteristics, their activities and their aspirations and study of the realities of contemporary rural society do suggest that the problem of urban unemployment and the nagging problem of the jobless urban youths is in the first instance a rural problem. It seems to imply that any solution of the 'urban' problem lies in efforts to solve the underlying 'rural' problem, which is almost invariably rural poverty and neglect of or shadowy investment into the rural sector. Any sucess in rehabilitating the youths and saving the generation of tomorrow depends on recognizing this fact.

Independent? : Tanzania's challenges since Uhuru

This book describes the history and challenges facing Tanzania through the voices and memories of Tanzanians and through their visions and ideas about the challenges Tanzania faces today. It is a story of set backs and disappointments, but also of pride. Among those interviewed are leading politicians, activists and researchers, but also ordinary everyday Tanzanians - farmers, workers, grandfathers and grandmothers, active and retired civil servants - are interviewed. The statements are used thematically in chapters forcusing on the various challenges that have faced Tanzania: from insufficient focus on agriculture to the menace of corruption; from socialism to capitalism and from the role of the family to the importance of religion. There is a strong focus on the limitation of independence. Tanzania is independent, but there is no true independence in a globalized world.
